Loquat (Biwa) Paperweights Edogawa Happi Coat - thisThe loquat, or in Japanese biwa, is a fruit tree native to China, and that has been cultivated in Japan for over 1,000 years. It is unusual in that it blooms in fall or early winter. This fan depicts fruit laden loquat branches, handpainted in watercolors by the suiboku (Chinese style watercolors) artist, Ransui Yakata of Tokyo. The golden fruit attracts a solitary bee, and the scene is celebrated in a poem also from Ransui's elegant brush at left.
