Charles Blackman 'Alice's Shoe' Framing:Unframed Pink and Brown)An adroit storyteller, Charles Blackmans rendition of Alice in Wonderland is askew. He opens on a shoe, unsuspecting but for the telltale window winking at it. This shoe is impossibly large swollen to dwarf the world it walks. For Blackman, Alices adventures in Wonderland were metaphoric of his then wife, Barbaras, experience of blindness. All is topsy turvy in this reality, intractable and out of scale. What is whimsical, fast becomes disorientating.
