Other than Gitxian Probe it is the only card in magic that replaces itself in cards and mana which has to be somewhat of a claim to fame

With that in mind, this is a good place to introduce the idea of converted mana cost or CMC

It doesn't grant the land any intrinsic abilities

If an effect allows you to cast a spell with tiered "without paying its mana cost," you must still choose exactly one mode and pay the associated additional cost
